Frequently asked questions
What must a debt validation notice include?
Under 12 CFR 1006.34 it must include the debt collector's name and mailing address, the consumer's name and address, the creditor on the itemization date (for consumer financial products), the account number, the current creditor, the itemization date, the amount then, an itemization of interest, fees, payments and credits since, the current amount, the validation period end date, and dispute and original-creditor request information.
When does the validation period end?
The validation period ends 30 days after the consumer receives the notice. A collector may assume receipt up to five days, not counting legal public holidays, Saturdays and Sundays, after providing it. This tool computes that date for you.
Do I have to use CFPB Model Form B?
No, but using Model Form B correctly gives a safe harbor for the content and format of the validation information (12 CFR 1006.34(d)(2)). This helper follows Model Form B's structure as a draft for your compliance review.
Can a validation notice be sent by email?
Yes, if the collector follows Reg F's electronic delivery rules, including E-SIGN consent or the procedures in 12 CFR 1006.42. Many teams still mail the first notice.
